Paladin The Paladin is the character that is perhaps more suitable to the multi-player game. But make no mistake; he is still capable of taking on the greatest of battles. Many of his aura powers can affect more than one player so he should always be part of a group.

Arrow Why Grief for Smiter? - 07-09-2006, 10:53 PM

I have been testing various weapons for my Smiter, just to see which will kill monsters and Ubers faster.

In my tests, a Ber'ed Heaven's Light does more damage than a Grief. So Why do people still keep prefering Grief over other weapons for a Smiter? That +400 Damaga doesn't apply, so why?!?!

the +400 dmg is invisble damage. just like its invisble on a zealer, or a barb, its also invisible on a smiter, but IT DOES APPLY.

See, the +400 dmg works as though u had +400 dmg on ur shield (min and maximum) (i read about that in cauhtemocs guide i think, and he was a smiter expert).
when a stat on an item is +Xdmg, it means the damage will apply to smite, and is not visible on the weapon or on ur stats, but is still there.

DO NOT confuse the +Xdmg mod with +X to maximum/+x to minimum dmg mod. They are COMPLETELY DIFFERENT MODS.

Also, dont confuse the +Xdmg from grief (which DOES work, and IS invisble) with the +ED from Fort or Pheonix (which DOES NOT work, and IS NOT invisble). People might say otherwise, but i know from TESTING ON BATTLE.NET (not with any modifications to d2) that it does not work

umm actualy the dmg does add to smite and it is statsed on arreat summit that it doesn't show up on the character screen because blizzard never actually updated the character screen for the expansion. also if u use grief and fort the ed on fort multiplies the 400 dmg on for adding about 2k dmg to smite wo when it says u doo 3.5k ur really doing 5.5k

I am aware of the difference between +Dmg and +Ed Dmg.But in my personal tests, I have found a Heaven's Light being better than a Grief. Has anyone tried that and got same results? Or am I just crazy... ahahaha.

well u said BER'd heavens light, its possible that the crushing blow from ber does more damage IN THE BEGINING. Since crushing blow deals about 1/8th (i think) of the monsters remaining life in dmg (so if he has 800 life, u would do 100+ur usual smite dmg, for example, and if he had 400, u would do 50+smite)
but in the end (or in pvp) grief deals more
but in the end of the end, lastwish's 60-70 crushing blow + might does even more in total :)

any chance you have some proof of this? i had remembered in 1.10 a bug where grief adn fort did NOT work together. was this fixed in 1.11? Please give proof

As far as using a smiter for UBERS:
CB (Crushing Blow) is the #1 factor in soloing ubers. I use a shael / Ber 2os Hvns light and can solo ubers fine. All my friends use LW phase/zerker and can do the same, probably easier due to Life Tap, Might, and 10+%CB. As long as you have 60+%CB you should be fine, of course the closer you can get to 100% the better. The mods on LW are just too good for Ubers. Ideal set-up would be LW phase/zerker, EExile 40+Res, Up'd Goblin Toe, 15str Dracs and whatever else you feel like using to get max resists/stacked resists/80+ Resists. The ED on fort won't do much vs. ubers, it's all about CB CB and more CB. Get LW, throw on an EGlitch Exile with 40+Res, Up some Goblin Toes, and use dracs and you'll be fine as long as your other gear gives you Max Res and Stacked Resists. That's all there is to ubers. As i mentioned up top however, I do just fine using ber shael hvns light, if you can't afford LW or dont want to drop 3hrs for a crap one, then just keep hvns light.

CB is a lot faster for ubers than a grief but, you can also kill ubers with a grief just a bit slower.

Well actually u can't really kill an uber w/ cb alone the phys dmg is wut kills it. the cb helps out but it is not really need to have a high ammount.

I got a 40/ 394 grief and i kill people in like 1 hit or so unless they are a roid raging barb. in which case i gotta play hanky panky a while waiting for them to mana *** or just make a mistake. grief owns and the xtra dmg always goes through i kill stuff so fast... also i think that crushing blow is fun for pvm and its never a bad thing. I heard read and agree that enig is still best smiter armor for 3 reasons...
1.) it gives you alotta str so you gan boost vita and save pnts for dex
2.) teleportation make ubers easy cause u can bypass sh*t and it gives skillz fior cta
3.) max life and dmg reduce from enig is good. and life after kills saved my a*s alot of times with grief and dracs i get like almost 50 life after each kill. it doesnt sound like much but when stuff dies in what hit and then life tap kicks in i kill everything with full life.

I think hoz is still best weapon for a smiter too eth one does insane dmg and the 4 to combat is irreplacable. i got 4 combat gc's and i got 41 combat skill smiter i do 3100 dmg just in my char stats plus grief dmg.
Dracs doesnt always work but if you got vita and you pick on the weaker enemies at first the life tap kicks in.
Eth exile is kinda overated IMO
message me if you wanna duel. and if you got a smiter with a pb grief ill laugh at you
pb grief is for pvm ask any real smiter

Anybody that dies in 1 hit from a Smiter should delete + remake.
Enigma = Fortitude, already discussed this in your other thread.
Drac's are for PvM, BM in PvP.

What realm are you? If Europe Ladder, I'll gladly introduce you to my Druid and Barb.

I used to use the Malice/Black runeword switch. Hit em with malice, finish it with black. No contest! GG ubers(DC too).

No compassion- like having a straight faced orgasm.
