Be careful if you really think you need to play on a realm. It is a touchy subject; for example you better not tell Laz or anyone over at the Phrozen Keep you are playing on them because it is against their Terms of Service. Here, I can't punch you in the mouth for mentioning them, although I am personally biased against them.

The reason you want to be careful is that some realms actually modify the gameplay; hack it if you will, giving you a pseudo-experience of Median 2008. When v1.57 of Median rolls around (keep an eye for it over the next couple of weeks for an official release), Laz will no longer include the .txt files with the mod, hoping it will not be modified by individuals/realms.

Median 2008 was largely created to be a single player experience, which I have mostly always done. If you wish to play with others (without realms), there are a couple of ways. You can play over TC/IP (LAN), and a program called Hamachi may be able to help you organize games with other players by easily giving IP's and making it a kind of instant messenger for the players. This is probably the best way, because the alternative is Open B.Net, and you never know what you'll find there.

Both of these online experiences may be stunted by the use of hacked or duped items which float around. For example, it is not uncommon to see some players with duped items from old patches, or other players with hacked small charms that have +7skills, attributes, resists, etc, etc, etc. Like I said, single player is probably the best way to play this particular mod, but if you need support from others, TC/IP would probably be the way to go.
