Smile Building My Own Arcade Machine - 05-14-2007, 01:31 PM

I'm going to attempt to build my arcade. I was cleaning out my storage closet this weekend & discovered a 3-prong outlet in there & decided to do it. I've already swept, laid carpet, and put in a fan, 48 inch blacklight, blacklight ceiling buib, and mini-fridge. I've printed up logos for the sides of the machine on high-quality photo paper, and I purchased several cans of black spraypaint. All I need now is plywood and a computer with a decent video card. Does anyone live in the NW Florida area with a truck or plywood or (I think it's called PCB) that could help me out? I'd probably be able to play D2 on it (I plan on installing a Wireless-G card in it), but that'd be slightly uncomfortable & unreliable onnection-wise. I will post pictures & possibly a video (when finished) as I progress, if y'all are interested in seeing it documented as I go.

He said he would probably be able to play d2 on it. So maybe that is why.

I think your poll is lacking. I mean you're leaving out the people in between. What about the people that are in the middle or don't care at all. And what about the people who are not as enthusiastic? I Would like to see the pictures of progress/completion but I do not feel that, "f*ck yeah" about it. Regardless I am forced to portray myself falsely and vote, "**** yeah."

I voted yes, mainly because I am sort of in the arcade machine business as well, and I could, quiet possibly learn something.

Question 05-18-2007, 03:00 PM

Yesterday we went shopping & I bought quite a few things towards building the "ultimate arcade machine." I took some pictures finally, due the overwhelming response in the votage.

My son in the future "game room"

My son operating a hand truck; this will be important when I have to take the wood off a moving truck.

Mini-fridge. Important for Beer & Full Throttle. Fan to keep cool.

Blacklight on the ceiling & on top of shelves for cool nightly effects.

256MB PCI Graphics Card in the discount bin.

UPS.

Logos for the side of the machine.

Wood screws, sandpaper, hinges.

Sander, drill, circular saw.

Looks like I have a plan, eh? Any suggestions? Has anybody ever built one of these before? I also have a wireless NIC, a bluetooth keyboard & mouse, a USB adaptor so I can plug in PS2 controllers & use them as the joypads (I hate the arcade style stick & buttons), and extra speakers and a 15 inch monitor. I still have yet to find the "plans" on how to build one of these, but I'm sure it won't be hard once I do. Does anybody have arcade plans they could post 4 me?

Talking 05-28-2007, 09:35 PM

Today we went to WAL*MART & LOWE'S, and I picked up a few more supplies. I plan to put wheels on this thing for when I need to move it. I initially wanted to install a roll-out keyboard & mouse board, but their "roll-out shelves" weren't to my liking. I guess I'll go with Bluetooth to make it happen. I was a little skeptical about getting the plastic "plexi-glass" to put in there, but I think it'll be worth it in the end. Hell, I don't even know WTF I'm doing with this thing or have any mechanical knowledge, but I'm sure off to a good start by the looks of things! Here's the pics:

I got some Full-Throttle for the mini-fridge

I got a couple workhorses for "work"

Speakers with subwoofer:

Extension cord for the drilling:

Wheels to move the thing:

Soundcard for premium sound:

Platic protective shield:

Plastic cutting tool:

Powerstrip & Magnetic Bolt-catches:

More hinges:

Door handle & support brackets:

Cool "Mad-scientist" safety goggles!!!

Like I said, I have almost NO knowledge of how to build anything & I'm going to be doing this without help whatsoever. If in the end I can do it, then you can do it too. Inspirational, eh? Here's a link to the plans I found.
My next move is to find out what kind of CPU hardware & reqs I need to make KI run smoothly. I'm going to test it out on my craptop & if it kicks, then I'll be buying a POS on EBAY. I still need to:

1.) Get a computer
2.) Get a [better] monitor (I have a 15" flatscreen)
3.) Order a MAME Marquee *just ordered*
4.) Get a lightbulb to light the marquee
5.) Install progs
6.) Build the cabinet
7.) Get a barstool
8.) Maybe get some blacklight posters to go in there too
9.) Buy some beer
10.) Paint the cabinet
11.) Wait for the paint to dry & put logos on it
12.) How the hell do I put the plastic shield in there?
13.) Nail everything down so it doesn't get all shook up in there
14.) Take more pictures & put more updates as I go
15.) Post a video of me enjoying it all
16.) Install some cupholders on the side of it

Marquee:

Man that is just freaking awsome!I have a suggestion: Make a step by step tutorial after you are done on the whole process and materials needed/used and I will sticky it.

This is actually really interesting man, you're starting something from scratch basically and investing some money into. It looks like it will occupy you and hopefully you're able to finish it and it will fully function.
