I've always like Ariocs Needle Spear, not the most damaging. In eth it would do decent damage. The reason i like this is the +4 to the mercs aura.

We seem to be forgetting one of the best merc weapons of all time for Act 5 barb merc.And that would be Eth Lastwish CB,for his armor he uses eth archon fortitude and for helm 2 os giant skull w/2 40-15's.His damage is kinda godly at 10k without any other auras but the might from lastwish.In Baal games with hammerdins and zealers/smiters he does stupid damage,like 20k.Plus he gets lifetap and fade.All in all very godly,but the barb merc is about the dumbest merc of all,kinda reminds me of the fighter class from the original final fantasy,lol.

Of course it does depend on how a merc can benefit any particular build most,...... but all things equal ,......an Infinitys conviction is a hard act to follow.

I agree,bluesky81,infinity is by far the best merc weapon for any character with elemental damage(except paladin using conviction already,lol)But for melee class characters,lastwish cb works great,especially for a ww barb.Or you could just use act 2 defiance merc with edoom cryptic,nightwings veil,and coh.He tanks,and his aura gets some good boosts.I guess what I'm tryin to say is that there really is no best merc,it really depends on your character setup and the equip you have available.Btw,I've seen alot of merc duels between act 2 mercs,and Ive seen one that has never lost,He was holyfreeze,with ebotd giant thresher,estone(3k def),and ber'ed vamps gaze.The ias from ebotd,and the lifesteal from that and the gaze,plus the fhr from stone all make one quick merc.

A last wish collossus blade is actually better than a btd for a barb merc. You can buy any ladder-only item and have it delivered to the non-ladder realm, however , the collosus version of Last Wish has not been available this current ladder season, or at least I have not seen it. I bought 3 last season.
I believe this discussion was on act 2 mercs only, however, if your character doesn't have to have any specific attribute associated with any of the various polearms in order to survive, then last wish collosus (not pb) will make a merc practically immortal because of the constant life tap it provides, much better than life steal on a btd even with raised ias. Life Tap converts the damage inflicted on monsters into life, and, I believe, because it's a curse, for both "you" and your merc, curse being similar to shared auras. I found a double socketed coa with additonal damge to be better than an andys also, and of course a eth fort. A last wish collosus perfect spawning runeword is only 10-15 min/max damage points below a btd.

Since i love my lite sorc I'll have to go with infinity and it staks well with Edream helm on merc ... Also why didn't you put faith A1 merc in choices I've tryed that once was fun.

insights for hdins, infinity for sorcs.

pretty much if u have a tele char, a merc works well. otherwise if u cant tele, u might survive a while for the merc to help u out (cs zonz w/o nigma)

otherwise, eth doom, eth bonehew are other good choics or some eth cryptic axe/cv polearm.

Infinity should sure be my first choise of a wep since it help all elemental damage characters, lke sorcerers. Lovely <3!

They're all very good weapons for their purposes. For the 2 gentlemen discussing Pride Vs. INfinity, Infinity WINS every time. Pride on a Summoner does NOT work out...

1.) Cold damage = reduced # of corpses
2.) Merc does less damage = Your whole plan to get an army started fails
3.) No ED
4.) No CB
5.) Not a very high level Conc (especially when compared to how high pallys get)
6.) Auto Dim-Vision. Yikes!
7.) Just golem the ***** if you're rich enough, and throw the Infinity on the Merc. If you're poor, golem an Insight.
