There's a vicious rumor doing the works in Ireland at the moment that the legal drinking age is going to be raised to 21. I know thats what it is in America, but I was wondering, what do you do at weekends and stuff then? Is underage drinking still a problem?

The only thing the age limit does is stop people who are not 21 from drinking in bars or buying it **sometimes** It most certainly does not and never will prevent people 21 and under from drinking. As for what they do if they are not 21 on the weekends...find someone who is to buy for them.

How goverments come to the conclusion when someone is ready to embark on drinking, smoking, or sex is beyond me. Quite personally I say leave it up to the parents.

In the 4th grade I had ways of getting alcohol so those under 21 who want to drink most certainly can.

I've had personal family members personally hand me drinks. And plenty of 'em. So I don't know what you're worrying about.

That may be the law in America, but that doesn't mean people follow it. Hell, here a 16 year old can host a keg party and get away with it.

Well, its just in Ireland, our whole weekend revolves around the pub/bar/nightclub! There is really nothing else to do! so what happens to the 18-20 age group in your country?

If caught, it is very probably that they are lectured about resposability and their parents/guardians are informed. Then it just depends on how strict those are.

not all clubs are u have to be over 21 to go into, u just cant go to the bar and for strip clubs u can be 18 and go in but u get a bigass X on your hand stating that your not 21 and cant be served alcohol. hell go catch a movie, go to an arcade, go play mini golf with a loved one, or just drive around and look for trouble, get a bunch of people and find a parking lot and loiter there untill cops show up then scramble out. thats always fun

Its not like raising it to 21 is going to stop any kids from drinking at home or away from public view.

I agree. The more you try to limit what someone does, the more they try to do it, even if they weren't trying that hard to begin with. We don't like to be told not to do something, and that generally makes us want to automaticly do it, spitefullly.

ireland will turn into a chavfest if they ever ban drinking for under 21's. Hopefully the government knows this and won't allow the law to be passed.

I respect that, I heard rebellious kids do that, and that will probably what would happen in Ireland. However, I have just never been through the phase where I would want to do something just because your not suppose to.

Thats just like curiosity.
You tell someone not to do something, but they do it anyway and something bad happens.

Well, the situation regarding underage drinking is pretty bad to begin with. I mean, you can see kids as young as 12 and 13 out drinking on the beach/in fields every weekend as it is now!
I know that you could still go to clubs and stuff, but am I the only one who feels weird if they're in a club stone-cold sober?

you do it because of the thrill you get when you do something bad/illegal, whether you are aware of it or not. I can think of many things i did, where in hindsight i was convinced i only did it for that reason, however i wasn't aware of it at the time i was doing it.

p.s. excuse my posting overload whilst i try to get 25 posts

you live in america, it's different there. i take it you've never lived in another country with a lower drinking age either?

growing up in germany i had my first encounter with alcohol at 13, at house parties whenever parents were gone. its quite bad in germany because kids start drinking at really early ages, but if they are raised in decent environments and have some common sense, i believe it does more good than harm. By the time they can legally drive they know their limits, they know how much they can drink and the dangers of alcohol, giving them a more responsible and respectful attitude towards it than most american teenagers i know.

added to that i can drink more than most americans in their 20's

only sucks how the government thinks i'm mature enough to drink yet and is forcing me to wait till 2009 to be able to legally do it ><
