This was sent to me in an e-mail:

> NO GAS...On May 15th 2007 don't pump gas on May 15th
>> ...in April 1997, there was a "gas out" conducted nationwide in protest
>> of
>> gas prices. Gasoline prices dropped 30 cents a gallon overnight.
>>
>> On May 15th 2007, all internet users are to not go to a gas station in
>> protest of high gas prices. Gas is now over $3.00 a gallon in most
>> places.
>>
>> There are 73,000,000+ American members currently on the internet network,
>> and the average car takes about 30 to 50 dollars to fill up.
>>
>> If all users did not go to the pump on the 15th, it would take
>> $2,292,000,000.00 (that's almost 3 BILLION) out of the oil companys
>> pockets for just one day, so please do not go to the gas station on May
>> 15th and lets try to put a dent in the Middle Eastern oil industry for at
>> least one day.
>>
>> If you agree (which I can't see why you wouldn't) resend this to your
>> entire contact list. With it saying, ''Don't pump gas on May 15th"

I have heard of these before, and how effective they are. Maybe it will have an impact, but who knows?

*shrug*

There are too many that will not survive without gas - this thing has been proposed many times, and even if there are the select few people out there that do this thing, it's not enough to have a real impact. People are skeptical this would actually work, so they don't involve themselves with this idea.

Basically, it'd be fun if it actually worked, but I doubt it ever will. Gas will continue to put a burden on our wallets - all we can do is pay up (or use alternative sources).

if people don't buy gas, won't the prices go even higher to make up for it, thus skrewing us over even more?

My workplace is less than a mile from my house so I only have to get gas like every 1 or 2 weeks. Odds are I wont be fueling up that day so count me in.

I have to go with Jedi and HIM both on this....it is not a realistic idea.
What it sounds like to me is someone with too much time on their hands.
Many people commute long distances and will buy gas anyway.

Actually the prices will go down if everyone was to stop for that day. Simple supply and demand. They will have to much gas therefore making them drop prices to get rid of the gas. If the demand is to high for the supply then the prices will go up.

Gas is to essential for to many people. Although it would be a nice idea it won't work. You would really need everyone to just conserve more gas in their day to day lives.

This is like the strike the hispanics did in Georgia to show the "impact" they have on the economy. Same shit happened as they always do, it make no impact at all.
As for the gas, what would be the point of doing this? Ok so they "lose" 3 billion in a day, and then the next day everybody is rushing to the pumps because their gas lights are on from not going the day before, it get's super crowded, they boost up prices 10-20 cents because so many people desperately need gas, and they almost triple profits of the normal day.

What would be better is a revolt. If a bunch of people rioted and protested in front of the oil companies' HQ's.

If any of you studied economy, then you should know this, and you should know that it will work if it's done in a large enough caliber.

For this it is not caliber like a gun...it is more along the lines of moving up to a Tank in an Divisional size.

Most people need gas, usually why they buy it, so the chances of people laying off the gas enough to effect supply and demand seems like kind of a low chance.

If you actually studied economy, you would know that gas is such an inelastic good that the price could raise 1$ and people would still buy it, thus making more money than 1$ less, so having people all boycott it would give them the opportunity to raise prices because everybody is going to come back, and they know it. It's not to make up for the day they missed, they have more than enough cash to do that. Gas stations aren't going to be like "zomg nobody like my prices lower lower lower!" unless they were completely stupid. If I was a gas station I would intentionally tell people to start these boycotts on the internet, it's a win-win station for both sides, the people boycotting can be hypocritical and feel like they are serving a purpose, and the gas stations rack in triple the cash they usually do.

You are an asshole. Work of genius though. But seriously you're more greedy than the Bangladeshi people I work for.
