Motorcyclists Roll to Soldier Funerals

By RYAN LENZ, Associated Press Writer

FORT CAMPBELL, Ky. - Wearing vests covered in military patches, a band of motorcyclists rolls around the country from one soldier's funeral to another, cheering respectfully to overshadow jeers from church protesters.

They call themselves the Patriot Guard Riders, and they are more than 5,000 strong, forming to counter anti-gay protests held by the Rev. Fred Phelps at military funerals.

Phelps believes American deaths in
Iraq are divine punishment for a country that he says harbors homosexuals. His protesters carry signs thanking God for so-called IEDs - explosives that are a major killer of soldiers in Iraq.

The bikers shield the families of dead soldiers from the protesters, and overshadow the jeers with patriotic chants and a sea of red, white and blue flags.

"The most important thing we can do is let families know that the nation cares," said Don Woodrick, the group's Kentucky captain. "When a total stranger gets on a motorcycle in the middle of winter and drives 300 miles to hold a flag. that makes a powerful statement."

At least 14 states are considering laws aimed at the funeral protesters, who at a recent memorial service at Fort Campbell wrapped themselves in upside-down American flags. They danced and sang impromptu songs peppered with vulgarities that condemned homosexuals and soldiers.

etc.

Fascinating.

Haha, phelps is just a hatefull old man. He can picket as many funerals as he likes but his insane message fails to get to anyone but idiots and rednecks whom have the intelligence of a dog. The old guy should die soon and it will pretty much stop. Anyone been to godhates**** recently?
The people picketing the funerals forget to remember the fact that those soldiers died so they could speak their opinions in a free country, which without them they could not do, plus, lets not forget how the picketers are racist, if america didn't have such soldiers i guess they would be in living hell right now.

Oh how ironic. Bombs fashioned by Muslim fundamentalists are considered divine intervention.

Wow, thats one of the more insane theories I've heard. Why the hell would "God" help people who have fought with his people for like 1000 years? (Thats sarcasm as I am an athiest)

The bikers should just riot and kill the old man.

If my bro or somone died in Iraq and people protested his funeral I don't think I could stop myself from shooting them. I know, stage a funeral and fill the church with explosives, then tell the rev. it was an act of god.

i think that the biggest blow that we can deal to people like that is completely ignoring them. they thrive on media attention because they feel that to have so much media focused on them automatically affirms how right they are. in reality, they're only getting attention because everyone loves to read about crazy people

One radical group vs another radical group.

This headline is ignorable.

In Boise (where I live) Phelps tried to get an anti-gay monument next to a Ten Commandments monument in our public park, and only succeeded in getting the Ten Commandments removed. Nice work, Reverand, way to support your christian beleifs. Now we have gays setting up a picnicks where the monument used to stand.

FYI I'm agnostic, and my stance on gays? Well anything is fine in the privacy of your own home but god don't force your ideals on everyone else.
