Fletcher Ndhlovu, a senior member of the Church of Central African Presbytery, said the congregation had gathered to prepare for Christmas celebrations in a village 300 kilometers (185 miles) north of the capital, Lilongwe, on Saturday when the tragedy happened. "It started raining heavily at around 2 o'clock when the congregation was about to have their lunch and almost immediately a strong bolt of lightning struck the building," he said. Ndhlovu said the 11 died on the spot and others suffered such as like fractures and burns. Mzimba District Hospital official Dr. Balton Jere said some of the survivors were unconscious when they were brought to the hospital. Others had minor cuts and were in shock. Bolts of lightning are common during the October-to-March rainy season. Police spokesman Willy Mwaluka said people die every year from lightning strikes but that it was rare for a single bolt to kill so many people. There is a popular belief in this superstitious southern African nation that lightning will strike anyone wearing red and standing under a tree. Some communities believe people use magic to send lightning to strike down their enemies.
