WASHINGTON - The House Agriculture Committee approved budget cuts Friday that would take food stamps away from an estimated 300,000 people and could cut off school lunches and breakfasts for 40,000 children.

The action came as the government reported that the number of people who are hungry because they can't afford to buy enough food rose to 38.2 million in 2004, an increase of 7 million in five years. The number represents nearly 12 percent of U.S. households.

"If there are cuts to be made, why should we make them on food stamps?" said Rep. David Scott (news, bio, voting record), D-Ga. "This is the meanest cut of all."

The cuts, approved by the Republican-controlled committee on a party-line vote, are part of an effort by the House GOP to curb federal spending by $50 billion. The food and agriculture cuts would reduce spending by $3.7 billion, including $844 million on nutrition, $760 million on conservation and $212 million on payments to farmers.

"The fact is, our country is going broke," said Rep. John Boehner (news, bio, voting record), R-Ohio. "We're spending money we don't have and passing it onto our kids, and at some point, somebody's got to say, `Enough's enough.'"

Ahem, let's not forget who owns the Committee, and let's not forget who could've said not to take away food stamps. Thank you.

The President pretty much controls everything that goes on in America, do you not realize that? He could've stepped up and stopped the Food Stamp's from being Rejected, but what did he do. He probably sat in his office playing a Gameboy, Right?

Damn right lol.

"$844 million on nutrition, $760 million on conservation and $212 million on payments to farmers."

Heh, they cut 1.6 billion on good things and only 212 million on subsidies. I guess we can see how the mind of a Republican works.

no, the president does NOT control everything that goes on. do you know anything about your government?

i'm not saying that the government has been doing a good job lately, because they have not. but you cannot blame every little thing that goes on in the country on the president. this was the committee's fault, it clearly states that the committee passed the cut

you dont think subsidies are a good thing? do you know what would happen if the government didnt pay farmers not to farm? basically the price of food would be shot to hell and literally TONS of food would rot in silo's unused.

this is a great example of the low intelligence level of those of you who blame bush for everything that goes on in the world

I say end ALL social programs. No more food stamps, no more welfare. Why reward people for being lazy? Granted, there are the few cases where somebody needs a hand, but it isn't that hard to find a job. Who ever said it is the goverments job to take care of people? Does this sound harsh? Sure it does, but after the worthless die out, society will be better off. Works for nature, why not us?

This comes into play here.
President Dwight D. Eisenhower once remarked, “Farming looks mighty easy when your plow is a pencil, and you’re a thousand miles from the corn field.”

Also from what I know the President really doesn't deal much with the Comittee, It was infact started by the house.

Also the Appropriations Committee is cutting the Agriculture Committee's funding, thus causing the Agriculture Committee to cut other things to help fund their research etc.

I never said that subsidies aren't a good thing. I'm just saying, if they are cutting so much out of conservation and nutrition, why not cut more from subsidies... sure the farmers dont have it easy but they could of cut more than 212 mil, while cutting 760 mil from conservation and 844 mil from nutrition.

What i am trying to say is that, more could've been cut from subsidies and been put to soften the blow to the other two. Whether the farmers get paid more or less, they are still gonna be farming at the end of the day. If they think they aren't getting paid enough, well there are a lot of less fortunate people who'd gladly take the job and work hard for the same money.

Just and FYI when it says comittee. That is congress and congress alone, if it says cabinet that is the president.

As for economics, the president has little say on what goes on this is a capitist economy not a socialist economy. YES, socialism is an economic form. If you are looking for some one to blame for the economy, blame every CEO of multi million dollor corporations who outsource jobs so that can make more money they dont even use.

That's what It has to do with the Topic.

And DaCougar, probably not.

To me, The Entire Goverment need's to grow a Brain, obviously America is going to hell, not because of this Food Stamp crisis, but other things which im not going to say because I want to stay on topic. The Goverment just needs money to fund theyre stupid War which is going nowhere as of now. If anyone opposes to that, go look up how much Debt we're in.
