Whether you call them copier-printers, all-in-ones, MFPs, or multifunction peripherals, these devices are essential tools in just about every office. They typically copy, print, and scan; and many still offer fax capabilities either as a standard feature or an option. We're focusing primarily on monochrome devices that produce from 20 to 50 pages per minute (ppm), although you'll notice some lower-end devices here that also output in color. It's a wide range, but our goal is to provide a look at a range of devices that would be appropriate for the smallest office up to a large office with multiple users.

The Aficio MP 4000B/MP 4000 from Ricoh Americas Corp. is designed for midsize to large workgroups and comes standard with 40-ppm printing and copying as well as black-and-white and color scanning capabilities out of the box in two preconfigured models-the SP and SPF (the SPF includes faxing capabilities). LAN fax capability enables users to save time and paper by sending faxes right from their desktop. Access to system functions can be protected with Windows/LDAP/Kerberos authentication, and temporary data stored on the hard drive can be protected with the optional DataOverwriteSecurity System, which overwrites latent copy, print, scan, fax, and Document Server data.
