I've seen a few pg-13 movies lately I.E. Hancock, Don't Mess with the Zohan, The love guru. And I've seen some stuff that I was surprised got a pg-13 rating. Droping the f-bomb 1-2times during the movie. etc.

What do you consider going over and what kind of material have you seen that you would have rated differently?

First off, take a look here: Motion Picture Association of America (http://www.mpaa.org/FlmRat_Ratings.asp)

This lists the MPAA (Motion Picture Association of America) ratings. They do say something about a single use of a harsher expletive yielding at least a PG-13 rating. Basically, it probably comes down to how the character portrayed that expletive. If it wasn't emphasized and merely there as a filler as part of a script, it may not get as much attention. However, if it is directed at someone, or generally said with greater emphasis, it might get some added attention.

You probably also take into fact that we have been generally desensitized these days, with the Internet, TV, movies, media, etc. It is becoming more acceptable to see scenes containing thematic elements (ie language, violence, sex, drug use). I'm sure there are people trying to cut this stuff out of children's lives, but the fact that one of these elements, violence, exists plenty in cartoons and animated material, children are viewing thematic elements from a young age. As they grow, the world around them shows them plenty of other elements, and they grow to realize this stuff is just everyday normalcy.

In general, I tend not to think that just because a kid views strong thematic elements they will grow up to be a drug lord, or bank robber, or prostitute, or any profession that is often frowned upon as being degratory to our society. It is the child's understanding that this material is merely meant to provide entertainment, and not to induce a changing lifestyle, that needs to be emphasized.

This is not to say that I think we should just give little kids NC-17 movies to watch, but as they grow, they should learn the fine line between entertainment and real life. That's where the parents come in.

It's funny, PG-13 exists only because Steven Spielberg didn't want Raiders of the Lost Ark to be rated R so he argued with the ratings bored and offer this alternative.

PG-13 can have the f-bomb once or twice and even show a nipple or two with some good bloody action but it can not be shown in excess.
