Ok,let us establish I am mostly computer retarded....stop laughing Fuggy...

Now then...I have just realized in the past several days, that only 2 USB ports on my computer are functional. This, only after being online and on the phone with 3 people, trying to figure out why things weren't working.

Plugging my mouse, keyboard, and webcam into various ports,I found only 2 worked.

Somehow this seems to be a "Bad" thing, and Flea was impressed that I figured out what a "Motherboard" is.(I still maintain a Ram is a male sheep.....quiet in the peanut section!!!)

After purchasing a USB hub,all parts are functioning. My big concern is...does this mean my computer is ready to croak? If so,any suggestions on a good, economical replacement?
Please don't tell me to build one.....anyone that knows me,will piss themselves laughing at that suggestion.

All comments will be appreciated.Perhaps not UNDERSTOOD......but I will give it my best shot.

Nah, It should be fine, USB ports aren't vital realy unless you have accesories which rely on them, like Mp3 players and other stuff like portable hard rives, i have 4 2.0 speed USBS that only work as lower quality usbs because the person that made my bf's compy is retarded.

As far as the mp3 player being vital to HER machine, it's not.

Mine takes 45 minutes to go from 0-100% battery, so there are many public places you can find a usb port. =)

Scott is right, USBs arent vital unless you have stuff that you rely on them for, i.e. keyboard, mouse, webcam

if the hub works fine theres nothing to worry about if the other 2 ports go so that the hub can no longer work i suggest either going to regular analog mouse and keyboard or you may have to get a new motherboard (i know its stupid new motherboard for USB ports)

on a side not, i almost died when i saw the works pam and build in the same sentence

basically what everyone else said, USB ports are not vital for your computer to work so you have nothing to worry about.

Usb ports usually stops working because of me accidentally unplugging them from the motherboard. It will work fine without any. You had to buy a usb hub for what?

pam, as long as you have one or two working you will be fine.

i almost dropped when i saw ram is a male sheep.. hehehehe :p

it depends on your situation. for your average user, not so much.
now that you know what a motherboard is, laugh: can you tell me how many usb ports you have?
the dead usb ports can either mean you have actual physically dead ports, or something is messed up on the software side.

im guessing the people you talked to already asked you to go to the device manager, so i wont say anything more

Yah....I love you too ski...

So my mouse(it has a pink fuzzy cover,with a nose,eyes,whiskers and ears) my keyboard,and webcam,will all work.

I have 4 in back and 2 in front, and I forgot to mention a fax machine as well as a scanner/printer are hooked up as well.
I went to device manager and my computer was not recognizing the new webcam.

After swapping around ports,I found those that functioned. So I bought a hub with 4 ports giving me a total of 5.

I am told my Ram has an impotence problem and needs some girlfriends to multiply my herd.

Thanks for the input guys XD...I am still wanting a newer more powerful computer soon, which also means I need a wireless router.

I didn't read all the post so don't jump down my throat if someone already post this. But it may be a software error. Try a system restore back to last date you remember it working.

or you could click on the device manager and choose to reinstall the drivers. just make sure you have your driver disk handy.

gl with the wireless router..

Hoho. Wireless routers are very frustrating the first time you use them. Be sure to follow the instructions carefully the first time. I use Linksys and it was a pain at first, but I think I mastered it. Linksys is pretty good brand still Imo.

Pam, for you the best advice I can give you is have geeksquad install your wireless network, sure its throwing money away, but it will save you a lot of swearing, and MIGHT save you money by not having you throw the router at the wall and buying a new one.

I actually can make a video on how to do it if you have any problems. Much like the video I made for the thread about falling off the face of the earth. Haha.

That is what is so funny Bigd...it all worked when I left for my sister's house, and it was allfuuked up when I got home.(we wont even GO into how many **** sites were in my browser cache and saved to favorites)....

Dan I also thought of having someone install it for me.Not only do I intend to get another desktop, but a few laptops for college purposes.
As for the software,I asked a friend to remote access my computer and look into it.Hopefully I will get it all figured out.

Ask long as your have one usb port functioning to hook up a hub to, then it's all good. Until the time you can't load windows properly, your system crashes ,or major problems like that, I would just not worry about anything. It's not like an automobile which would get worse and worse as time/useage continues.

But for edification... How old is your current PC?
