But can the direction/perception of gravity be changed? Ever stand up to fast, or look at a certain image and fell yourself going off balance? "Down" is a relative direction. If you stand on your head, then gravity is up to you. The term "in" could be more precise. In this case, 'down' and 'in' are pretty much the same thing. But an even better word would be 'towards' the center of the Earth (or any other mass). The gravitational acceleration exerted by any mass 'acts' as if all of the mass were concentrated at a single point called, cleverly enough, the 'center of mass'. For a sphere of constant density, this point is the center of the sphere. Following taken from: Sir Isaac Newton: The Universal Law of Gravitation (http://csep10.phys.utk.edu/astr161/lect/history/newtongrav.html) This can be illustrated with the thought experiment shown in the following figure. Suppose we fire a cannon horizontally from a high mountain; the projectile will eventually fall to earth, as indicated by the shortest trajectory in the figure, because of the gravitational force directed toward the center of the Earth and the associated acceleration. (Remember that an acceleration is a change in velocity and that velocity is a vector, so it has both a magnitude and a direction. Thus, an acceleration occurs if either or both the magnitude and the direction of the velocity change.) http://csep10.phys.utk.edu/astr161/lect/history/cannonS.jpg But as we increase the muzzle velocity for our imaginary cannon, the projectile will travel further and further before returning to earth. Finally, Newton reasoned that if the cannon projected the cannon ball with exactly the right velocity, the projectile would travel completely around the Earth, always falling in the gravitational field but never reaching the Earth, which is curving away at the same rate that the projectile falls. That is, the cannon ball would have been put into orbit around the Earth. Newton concluded that the orbit of the Moon was of exactly the same nature: the Moon continuously "fell" in its path around the Earth because of the acceleration due to gravity, thus producing its orbit. itsjustme 10-25-2007, 05:59 PM Look Capt. Spalding! You were right! You CAN fall off the face off the Earth. Maybe your not as dumb as I thought! ;) http://i233.photobucket.com/albums/ee265/itsjustme20/flat_earth.jpg Z3R0 10-25-2007, 07:30 PM Look Capt. Spalding! You were right! Maybe your not as dumb as I thought! ;) http://i233.photobucket.com/albums/ee265/itsjustme20/flat_earth.jpg Acctually, that is depiction of an early European common idea on perspective. In perspective, you have what you call a vanishing point, which is the extent of how far you can see into the horizon. They thought that when you wen't past that point, that you fall of the "edge" of the world, because they deemed that the world was flat based on perspective alone. itsjustme 10-25-2007, 07:42 PM I was being sarcastic.....blank: Z3R0 10-25-2007, 09:33 PM So was I. xD itsjustme 10-25-2007, 09:37 PM :p lol. KazeCloud 10-26-2007, 12:38 AM Well then thats good, down may not be a perfect word, but works nonetheless. Now imagine you being in that cannon. Did anyone watch my video btw? Haha. Z3R0 10-26-2007, 01:17 AM I did, it was funny as hell. Your friend tried to eat the apple and you slapped his hand. Lol. KazeCloud 10-26-2007, 01:45 AM Hahah. Thanks. Screamthoughts 11-16-2007, 04:22 AM And The Stupidness Goe's On! Lol KazeCloud 11-16-2007, 04:27 AM Yes they are. Stand anywhere on earth. Gravity will be pulling you down, all the time no matter where, down. If you fall of a cliff in the US you will fall down, if you fall of a cliff in China, you also fall down. Gravity makes it so no matter where you are, its always feels like its in the same direction. Down. When no gravity is present, then there is no real "Down" or "Up. But the thing is, we are on earth where gravity is present. So let me do it again. When a person or a projectile is shot off earth at 8 Km/s we will be in orbit. So if we slip off a banana peel and fly at more than: ~8 Km/s away from earth or... ~7 Miles/s away from earth or... ~25,000 Miles/hr away from earth. We will of fallen off the face of the earth. Why? If we do not approach these speeds, we will fall back on to earth. If those speeds are met, then we will not fall back to earth. If you don't fall back in earth, then you must of fallen off the face of the earth. Video coming soon. Edit: Heres the video: *Removed* I stuttered a bit but hey i'm not an actor. Sorry about my voice.=D Oh gawd I rewatched it lol. I don't make much sense in the end hahah. Remaking...*Shakes Head* Edit: Jackie Cheng Falling off the Face of the Earth Shortfilm Video on IMEEM Video (http://profile.imeem.com/UymXifg/video/zD2qPyp7/jackie_cheng_falling_off_the_face_of_the_earth_sho rtfilm_vid/) Not really. Did you see my video? Screamthoughts 11-16-2007, 04:31 AM All this all because of a dumb a.ss who didn't know how to just shit up! Sorry, I find it quite funny that this discussion is still going on, some very good thoughts brought up. itsjustme 11-16-2007, 04:53 AM Ummm, this discussion wasn't going on until you brought it back up to the top -- it had ended on the 26th of last month... laugh: KazeCloud 11-16-2007, 10:04 PM All this all because of a dumb a.ss who didn't know how to just shit up! Sorry, I find it quite funny that this discussion is still going on, some very good thoughts brought up. No need to call people names. The argument was very mature until you came in and did not contribute but insult the people arguing. Screamthoughts 11-18-2007, 02:44 AM No this all started when I told Zero "to go fall off the face of the earth"! Yes I did watch your video amusing, might I say!:D |
