22 dead in Va. Tech shooting rampage

Gunman shot people in a dorm, second building; suspect among dead

BLACKSBURG, Va. - A gunman opened fire in a dorm and classroom at Virginia Tech on Monday, killing 21 people in the deadliest campus shooting in U.S. history. The gunman also was killed.

“Today the university was struck with a tragedy that we consider of monumental proportions,” said Virginia Tech president Charles Steger. “The university is shocked and indeed horrified.”
The university reported shootings at opposite sides of the 2,600-acre campus, beginning at about 7:15 a.m. at West Ambler Johnston, a co-ed residence hall that houses 895 people, and continuing about two hours later at Norris Hall, an engineering building.
Some but not all the dead were students. One student was killed in a dorm and the others were killed in the classroom, said Virginia Tech Police Chief W.R. Flinchum.
The name of the gunman was not released. It was not known if he was a student.
NBC's Pete Williams said two law enforcement officials told him the gunman killed himself. They also said the gunman used two 9-mm handguns during the rampage, Williams reported. He said the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms was trying to track the weapons.
Up until Monday, the deadliest campus shooting in U.S. history took place in 1966 at the University of Texas, where Charles Whitman climbed to the 28th-floor observation deck of a clock tower and opened fire. He killed 16 people before he was gunned down by police. In the Columbine High bloodbath near Littleton, Colo., in 1999, two teenagers killed 12 fellow students and a teacher before taking their own lives.
After Monday’s shootings at Virginia Tech, all entrances to the campus were closed.
The university set up a meeting place for families to reunite with their children at the Inn at Virginia Tech. It also made counselors available and planned a convocation for Tuesday at the Cassell Coliseum basketball arena. After the shootings, students were told to stay inside away from the windows.
“There’s just a lot of commotion. It’s hard to tell exactly what’s going on,” said Jason Anthony Smith, 19, who lives in the dorm where shooting took place.
Aimee Kanode, a freshman from Martinsville, said the shooting happened on the 4th floor of West Ambler Johnston dormitory, one floor above her room. Kanode’s resident assistant knocked on her door about 8 a.m. to notify students to stay put.
“They had us under lockdown,” Kanode said. “They temporarily lifted the lockdown, the gunman shot again.”
“We’re all locked in our dorms surfing the Internet trying to figure out what’s going on,” Kanode said.

It's makes me angry that younger people are beginning to pick up guns quicker then dealing with their situations differently. If you use your fists you can still hurt someone, but either way at least both people get to live another day. It's unfortunate how people are so afraid of getting beat up they'd prefer just shooting someone...outrageous.

this is kinda unbelievable. the guy even chained the doors so people could not escape. to keep the gunman stuck in one room, the students were holding the doors shut with their feet. kinda shocking.

Not be an ass or anything...but considering how many people have died in Iraq, on both sides, this seems a little insignificant.

Yes, as we all know US soldiers go into iraqi schools and murder people trying to better themselves and get an education.

Yep, no big deal.

can we nominate him as biggest dumbass? Warn me all you want, but for ****s sake he is a faggot moron who should be dead already according to Darwin.

So far as I know the number of shot is over 50 with dead somewhere at the 30s.
This is far from a *small incident* And is NOT A WAR! WTF are you thinking?
War is war...a school shooting is a deranged act by a maniacal pissed off moron with issues.
War is carried out by patriots...at this point I suggest you shut up.

I'm not trying to justify the gunman's actions in the least.

And I don't mean just the soldiers in Iraq killing Iraqis or the other way around. Every ****ing time I open a paper there was another bombing where ten, twenty thirty or more people have died. You think everyone in Iraq is a bad guy? As if those people are not trying to better their lives.

And soldiers kill innocent people...on purpose none the less. I've seen videos of soldiers driving down the highways gunning down drivers. They were not gunning down terrorist...Just normal people that did nothing to deserve it.

This will be my last reply.

CAN YOU NOT READ?
Where did I ever say that people in Iraq were all bad? OH WAIT! I said the exact oppisite. Soldiers over there KNOW THE RISKS! How would you like it if I came to your school and shot you in the back of the head while taking a math test? I don't think you would very much.

Stay off of youtube dumbass. BTW I do know about soldiers killing innocents in iraq, they were TRIED, CONVICTED, AND EJECTED FROM THE MARINES! One major event was in a place that started with a H... with some sort of Dam near the city. It was over a year ago and I don't remember the article, but at the time it created a huge uproar.

If you cannot tell the difference from a school shooting, and a shootout in a war, then I feel sorry not only for you, but anyone who has to deal with you in real life.

On topic, I do know many friends who have family at VT, (well not many, more like 2 friends) and I hope to God that they are fine. Its people like you and people like the shooter who **** America up so much.

Mom is still online hun...behave.~Pamela

This is a thread about a school shooting...I am hoping you can hang with us long enough to add to topic, before you cause this to be closed.

The shooting cause may never be discovered because the shooter killed himself.
