1: you need to have a full diablo II install with full LoD Install and D2Loader.
2: download WinMPQ from here (http://phrozenkeep.it-point.com/forum/dload.php?action=category&cat_id=13) and extract it to a folder of your choice. you may need to download a dll from here (http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dll-files.shtml?vb40032) and put it in the same directory as WinMPQ.
3: Open Up an MPQ file in WinMPQ (Example: d2video.mpq) and select every file except (listfile) and if it is there (attributes) and delete them. then select "compact" to apply the changes to the file.
you can repeat step 3 for which files you want to shrink. I have managed to get a full install down to 860mb by deleting the videos, music and speech. videos take up 500/600mb, music takes up 329mb and speech takes up around 200mb.
if there is demand and it's allowed i might upload some empty mpq's to make things easier for some people
