i still dont get it how do you upgrade an item on ladder?

These recipes upgrade the unique item type from normal to Exceptional. For instance if you had Blastbark, the unique Long War Bow, this recipe would turn it into a Gothic Bow with Blastbark's exact modifiers. Increasing weapon damage and armor defense is the point of these recipes:

Normal Unique Armour to
Exceptional Unique Armour
1 Tal Rune (#7)
+ 1 Shael Rune (#13)
+ Perfect Diamond
+ basic unique armor

Normal Unique Weapon to
Exceptional Unique Weapon
1 Ral Rune (#8)
1 Sol Rune (#12)
+ Perfect Emerald
+ basic unique weapon

These recipes upgrade the unique item type from Exceptional to elite. For instance if you had Cliffkiller, the unique Large Seige Bow, it would upgrade to a Crusader bow with Cliffkiller's exact stats:

Elite Unique Armour
1 Ko Rune (#18)
+ 1 Lem Rune (#20)
+ Perfect Diamond
+ Exceptional unique armor

Exceptional Unique Weapon to
Elite Unique Weapon

skye is correct. upgrading weapons would use the weapon category. all of the armours (helm, body armor, belt, gloves, and shield) all fit into the armor category :o
