To build the best freakin' merc, do the following:

Get a Defensive Merc from Act II, (NORM or HELL) preferably same or 1 level below your own.
Equip him with an elite eth bugged Fortitude armor. EL SOL DOL LO
Equip him with an elite eth bugged DOOM Polearm.
Equip him with an eth CHAMed or UMed Vampire Gaze or Crown of Thieves. Alternate: RALed Andariel's Visage.

If you're playing a sorc, then by all means use the above merc w/Infinity Polearm instead.
